Dill oil has at least 10 different aromatic compounds. The dill seed oil and dill weed oil have different chemical compositions, which vary according to geographical location, time of harvest, growth condition and isolation procedure.5
Dill seed oil's chemical constituents are limonene, -pinene, -Terpinene, decanal, terpinene-4-ol, -elemene, cis-Dihydrocarvone and caryophyllene, trans-hydrocarone, carvone and dillapiole. For dill weed oil, the principal constituents are carvone, limonene, ±-phellandrene and 3,7-dimethyl-4,5,6,7-tetrahydro coumaran. Dill weed oil is milder than dill seed oil because it has less carvone and more ±-phellandrene. Dill seed is an annual herb produced in many countries worldwide. The herb that grows up to 90 cm has slender stems and bear yellow flowers. The dill seeds are utilized for the extraction of essential oil through steam distillation process. The resultant dill seed oil is clear to pale yellow liquid with watery consistency, and fresh, sweet, slightly spicy fragrance. The dill seed oil is known for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antimicrobial, anti-bacterial, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antioxidant,decongestive, galactogogue, digestive, sedative and other properties responsible for reducing pain, alleviating inflammation, preventing fungal, bacterial & microorganism growth, etc.
